UNIT 3: CH 3 & 4: HAIR AND FIBER EVIDENCE
Hair is important to all mammals, including humans, and has the same basic structure in most organisms. However, its these differences in structure, function and variation, that can help an investigator determine some general characteristics of an individual.
Fibers, like hair, can be easily transferred between people, or between people and objects or their environment. It can help determine who and/or where the victim (or suspect) has been contact. Textiles are fairly easily identified due to their unique weave patterns. Looking at these weave patterns in conjunction with the number of threads, and the number of threads "jumped" will help identify the type of fiber that has been found. Both physical and chemical analysis may be needed to identify the fiber.
