UNIT 16: CH 7: DNA FINGERPRINTING
DNA is the blueprint of life. It contains all the instructions for determining the physical characteristics of a person. In fact, no two people have the same DNA, except identical twins. It can be found in the nucleus of most human cells. Because you get half of your DNA from each parent, DNA is useful for determining whether two people are related or not. It can even tell where your ancestors come from (yes, I was surprised by my Ancestry DNA results!).
In forensic investigations, DNA evidence may be used to identify individuals and connect victims to suspects and scenes. In this unit you will be running the same type of test investigators do to isolate the DNA "fingerprint" - gel electrophoresis. You will also learn that handling of DNA evidence: blood, saliva, semen, or urine, needs to be done very carefully because it can easily be contaminated or degraded.
